Erythrasma is a bacterial skin infection characterized by brownish or pink patches, often found in the armpits, groins, or under the breasts. The infection may itch or cause a burning sensation.
Symptoms
The main symptoms of erythrasma include:
- Flat, slightly scaly patches in the armpits or groins
- Colors ranging from pink to brown
- Itching or a slight burning sensation
- Patches that gradually enlarge
Causes
Erythrasma is caused by bacteria that thrive in warm, moist environments. People with diabetes or overweight are more susceptible to this infection.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is often made with a Wood’s lamp, which makes the patches on the skin light up. Sometimes a small piece of skin is taken for further examination.
Treatment
Treatment may consist of antibiotics, both in pill form and cream.
