Herpes Simplex

Herpes simplex is a common viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types: HSV-1, which usually causes cold sores around the mouth, and HSV-2, which primarily causes genital herpes. The virus remains in the body for life and can periodically flare up.

Symptoms
The symptoms of herpes simplex vary by person and type. Common complaints include:

  • HSV-1 (oral herpes):
o Tingling or itching around the mouth or lips
    o Painful blisters or sores
o Crusting after a few days
o Sometimes fever, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes
  • HSV-2 (genital herpes):
o Itching or burning sensation in the genital area
    o Painful blisters or sores
    o Difficulty urinating
o Flu-like symptoms such as fever and fatigue

Herpes outbreaks can vary in severity and frequency, and some people experience no symptoms at all.

Causes
Herpes simplex is caused by infection with the HSV virus. Transmission occurs through:

  • Direct skin-to-skin contact, such as kissing or sexual intercourse
  • Contact with infected bodily fluids
  • Sharing personal items such as lip balm or razors

Genetic factors can influence susceptibility to the virus and the frequency of outbreaks. Factors such as stress, weakened immunity, menstruation, and exposure to sunlight can also trigger an outbreak.

Diagnosis
A doctor diagnoses herpes simplex based on:

  • Physical examination: Identifying characteristic blisters or sores
  • Laboratory tests: A swab from a blister can be tested for the presence of the virus
  • Blood test: This can help detect antibodies against the virus, indicating a past infection

Treatment
There is no cure for herpes simplex, but symptoms can be managed with:

  • Antiviral medications: Such as acyclovir, valacyclovir, or famciclovir to reduce the severity and duration of an outbreak
  • Pain relievers: Paracetamol or ibuprofen can help with pain and fever
  • Creams and ointments: To relieve itching and discomfort

Self-Care
Daily habits can help reduce symptoms and prevent flare-ups:

  • Avoid direct contact with herpes sores from others
  • Keep affected skin clean and dry
  • Use a lip balm with sun protection
  • Wash hands regularly, especially after touching an affected area
  • Avoid stress and ensure sufficient rest and a healthy lifestyle

Consultation types

Walk-in Consultation

A walk-in consultation allows you to have a real-time video consultation with the doctor without a prior appointment. You will enter a virtual waiting room, and the dermatologist will attend to you as soon as possible.

E-mail advice

Email advice allows you to receive a professional assessment from a certified dermatologist via email within two working days. Based on your input or AI assessment, the doctor will provide their evaluation and recommendations in writing. Email advice is limited to written guidance. If your situation requires further treatment steps to be arranged, the doctor will recommend a video or walk-in consultation instead.

Physical Consultation

A physical consultation involves an in-person visit to the doctor's clinic or designated location. You will have the opportunity to discuss your skin concerns face-to-face and receive a thorough examination and treatment plan.

Video Consultation

A video consultation allows you to have a remote appointment with the doctor via a secure video platform, from the comfort of your own home. Because the consultation takes place in real time, the doctor can discuss your skin concern in more detail and arrange any further treatment steps directly during the appointment.
