Pitted Keratolysis (sweaty feet)

Image

Pitted keratolysis is a superficial infection of the stratum corneum on the soles of the feet, particularly in pressure areas where the callus layer is thick. The infection is usually associated with sweaty feet, prolonged wearing of poorly ventilated shoes, and poor hygiene. The condition is common, especially in tropical regions but also among athletes and in certain occupations. It is slightly more common in men and can occur in both children and adults.

Symptoms:

  • Small, shallow pits in the skin of the soles of the feet or palms.
  • Strong, unpleasant odor.
  • Feeling of excessive moisture or sweating of the feet.
  • Sometimes a slight burning sensation or itchiness.
  • Symptoms worsen in warm, humid conditions.

Causes:

Pitted Keratolysis is caused by an infection with specific types of bacteria that thrive in moist environments. Wearing tight, non-breathable shoes can increase the risk of this condition. Excessive sweating may also be a contributing factor.

Diagnosis:

The diagnosis is typically made by a dermatologist or general practitioner based on the appearance of the skin and symptoms described. A skin sample or culture may be needed at times.

Treatment:

  • Antibacterial creams or lotions, such as those containing erythromycin or clindamycin.
  • Antifungal agents if a fungal infection is present.
  • Use of drying agents to keep the feet dry.
  • In severe cases, an oral course of antibiotics may be necessary.

Self-Care Tips:

  • Wear well-ventilated shoes and avoid wearing the same shoes two days in a row.
  • Opt for socks that absorb moisture well, such as wool or special synthetic materials.
  • Wash and thoroughly dry feet daily, especially between the toes.
  • Use foot powders or antiperspirants to keep feet dry.
  • Avoid staying in moist shoes or environments for long periods.

Consultation types

Walk-in Consultation

A walk-in consultation allows you to have a real-time video consultation with the doctor without a prior appointment. You will enter a virtual waiting room, and the dermatologist will attend to you as soon as possible.

E-mail advice

Email advice allows you to receive a professional assessment from a certified dermatologist via email within two working days. Based on your input or AI assessment, the doctor will provide their evaluation and recommendations in writing. Email advice is limited to written guidance. If your situation requires further treatment steps to be arranged, the doctor will recommend a video or walk-in consultation instead.

Physical Consultation

A physical consultation involves an in-person visit to the doctor's clinic or designated location. You will have the opportunity to discuss your skin concerns face-to-face and receive a thorough examination and treatment plan.

Video Consultation

A video consultation allows you to have a remote appointment with the doctor via a secure video platform, from the comfort of your own home. Because the consultation takes place in real time, the doctor can discuss your skin concern in more detail and arrange any further treatment steps directly during the appointment.
